Expeditions in Chronological Order

1818 John Ross sails to Baffin Bay
1818-1820 William Edward Parry overwinters at Melville Islands.
1819 John Franklin leads a land expedition to Canadian Coastline.
1821-1823 Parry's second attempt is halted at Fury/Hecla Strait (the masters mate was Francis Crozier - from Banbridge, Co Down.)
1824-1825 Parry's final attempt ends in the wreck of Fury. (Croizer was masters mate on Hecla.)
1825-1827 Franklin maps 1000 miles of Canadian Arctic coastline.
1826 Parry/James Ross reach 82 45 north towards North Pole across polar ice pack, Lieutenant Crozier was left in charge of the ship.
1829-1833 John Ross beset for four winters. James Ross discovers North magnetic Pole 1831.
1833-1835 George Back travels down Great Fish River in an attempt to rescue John Ross.
1836-1837 Back sails to Wager Bay.
1837-1839 The Hudson Bay Company overlanders Peter Dease and Thomas Simpson explore and map stretches of the Canadian Arctic coast.
1839-1843 James Ross and Francis Crozier take Erebus and Terror to Antarctica. They charted the Antarctic Ice Shelf and discovered Mount Erebus an active volcano.
1845-1847 John Franklin takes Erebus and Terror in search of North-West Passage. Francis Crozier commands Terror. James Fitzmaurice commands Erebus. Both crews vanish and perish without trace.
